Nawaz Sharif’s Secret Government Is Making Mockery of Democracy

The essence of a democracy is that the government represents the will of the people, not the arbitrary whims of one man or a small group of elites who wield power to their own benefit and to advance their own agendas. Part of ensuring the will of the people is requiring government officials to work in ways that are open to public view so that the people can protest and express disapproval if officials do things that they do not like. Despite being a democratically elected Prime Minister, however, Nawaz Sharif is governing like a dictator.

News today is that the Rupee rise was nothing but an illusion, the result of a $1.5 billion loan from Saudi Arabia secretly obtained by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. While foreign loans and grants are not unusual for any country, the terms of this billion dollar loan are very worrisome.

The governor of the Saudi central bank declined to comment, and officials gave no details of the loan terms.

Despite being a democracy, we have no knowledge of what we promised in return for the hefty payment of $1.5 billion. All we do know is that Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the Saudi financier and member of the House of Saud, has described Sharif as “Saudi Arabia’s man in Pakistan”.

This is not the only secret deal making that Nawaz Sharif has been carrying on behind our backs. On Wednesday, media reported that the government is putting together a secret committee to hold secret negotiations with terrorists behind closed doors and out of the public view.

Not just the public is being kept in the dark, though, according to media reports, Nawaz Sharif is not even taking his own government into confidence!

Most cabinet members are virtually unaware of the developments relating to the dialogue process.

Nawaz Sharif came to power in a legitimate democratic election, but his actions are threatening to undermine the credibility his government. Secret deals to obtain billions from foreign countries, holding secret negotiations with enemies and leaving even your own cabinet in the dark – these are the actions of a dictator, not a democratically elected Prime Minister.
