Death of a Thousand Cuts

Rashed Rehman

Human Rights Advocate Rashid Rehman Khan was gunned down in his chambers Wednesday night. So much has already been said about the latest assassination. Lawyers are striking. International human rights groups are condemning the killing. Politicians will condemn the killing or be silent as they see how it will benefit their political plans.

The ancient Chinese had a form of torture called ‘lingchi’ where a knife was used to make cuts on a body over an extended period of time. This torture is also known as the ‘death of 1000 cuts’ because, even though the victim did not die from any one cut, after a while, the victim died from the process.
